This film is a 1,140 frame mixed media stop motion animation. I traditionally animated each frame by hand on paper and then scanned all 95 pages of film back into the computer. None of the colors are edited, just a completely raw video. This is simply video stills and paint with collected papers to collage with.
‘Nausea’ is a surrealist, psychedelic-like visual representation of curiosity and emotion. I use a lot of spikes and stars with swirls as well as stressing the intense analogous colors to complementary color palette to depict chaos or unfamiliarity. From yellow and green to red and pink transitions to greens with reds and purples with yellows. The collage effect I used on the puke puddle and the background is intended to be strobed so that you feel as confused and lost as me in the video. At some point my heart blasts out of my chest after I seem to be emoting heartbreak. The film is interpretational. I did not have much of a specific concept while making this, as it is supposed to be surreal art. It is whatever you want it to mean. I’ve made the most human-esque film I possibly could.
I like to think that this is a visual representation of my mind while making this work. Surrounded by ideas of art, wanting to make more and being so set that this is my passion, but getting a bad headache because I’m pushing myself “too hard”. 5 straight days of labor in a minute and a half. Please enjoy.
